A road climbs up to the entrance of the Renaissance village of Pienza, the city of Pope Pius II and home to the famous Pecorino cheese. Perched atop a hill, Pienza overlooks the entire Val d’Orcia, offering incredible views. This charming village is known as the "ideal" city of the Renaissance, created by the great humanist Enea Silvio Piccolomini, who later became Pope Pius II. Strolling through the narrow streets of Pienza, one is immersed in a harmonious and perfectly proportioned setting, as if admiring a Renaissance city captured in a beautiful painting. The panorama is painted in a thousand shades of yellow, red, and ochre from the rolling hills of Val d’Orcia. Behind Pienza stands Monte Amiata, the highest extinct volcano in Italy, and the mighty Radicofani Fortress, built on top of an imposing basalt rock standing 869 meters high, dominating the entire region.
Points of interest: Pienza Cathedral, Palazzo Piccolomini.
